Behind the Mask
I’m so thrilled with how work is going on Behind the Mask! This is the 4th book in the Associates series; it features my most extreme, ultra-caveman type hero, but oddly, it’s my most heroine-centered book. This heroine is really close to my heart, and this book is really important to me for the sorts of issues that it deals with. I hope you will like it!
Release: May 19th
Price: $3.99 for the first three days, then $4.99
Preorder: no (but if you’re on my release alerts list, you’ll get an email when it goes live)
Available: digital and print soon after, all platforms
TO SAVE HER TWIN SISTER SHE MUST SWITCH PLACES WITH HER…
When her estranged sister – a prostitute – is won in a card game by a brutal drug cartel, Zelda knows what she has to do: take her place. Save her. Focus on infiltrating the shadowy group on behalf of the Associates, and try not to think about why she left the spying game years ago. She’s slept with dangerous criminals before; she can do it again.
Hugo Martinez is one of South America’s most lethal and wanted men, a legendary mercenary living on a windswept mountain. Even at the height of the war he wasn’t in the habit of taking women captive, but the American whore has seen his face. And he and the orphan boy need a cook. He shouldn’t want this woman, but there’s something so unusual about her…
Meanwhile, Zelda finds herself falling for her captor…but is he the killer she’s been hunting all these years?

Associates #4 update
I’m hot on finishing this new Associates book. I’m really excited about it–this is my most heroine-centered story (it’s about Zelda) and it also features the most unreadable, taciturn, caveman-like alpha hero I’ve ever written. As well as my riskiest sex scene ever (unless my critique partners unanimously give me the side-eye).
I sent it to a few of my CPs at the end of January. Once they’re through with it I’ll do another draft, send it to other trusty author pals as well as my editor, then do another draft, then more editing and proofing. Hop on my email list for release alerts!
The Associates on audio…
It’s so thrilling to have the Associates coming out on audio! The series is narrated by actress Romy Nordlinger, who did such a fabulous job. It’s fun to hear a really talented actress read the books, because it’s like another artist bringing something fresh to them, and I hear new things and get excited all over.
I have lots of really fun books news this summer. The biggest news is that Off the Edge was awarded the 2014 RITA for best romantic suspense by RWA!
I can’t even tell you what a massive honor this is. Also, it was also the first-ever indie book to win this prestigious award, so it’s doubly fabulous, and so wonderful of RWA to pull indies into the RITA fold! Apparently I gave a speech, but I barely remember anything after they called my name.
Another newsy item: The Undercover Associates will be coming out in Audiobook this fall from Tantor. This past week I got to hear an audio clip of the narrator, Romy Nordlinger. She’s a really talented and compelling voice actor with tons of range. (And, she has appeared on One Life to Live and All My Children…ahem not that I spent hours of my youth watching soaps).
Print books for the Associates #2 & #3 are out, and #1 is nearly done. I’m writing #4 this fall–it’s Zelda’s story. Expect it winter of 2014/2015…tentatively. It may take longer.

HE’S A KILLER.
Thorne McKelvey knows exactly how Nadia sees him—as a brute and a killer just kinky enough to play her sexy games. And that’s how it has to stay. Leaving her was the hardest thing he ever did, but his undercover mission could blow up at any second. No way will he drag Nadia down with him.
SHE CAN’T RISK HER HEART.
Maybe it was foolish to fall in love with her late father’s deadliest henchman, but Nadia Volkov’s not sorry; without Thorne she wouldn’t have their beautiful little boy. There’s nothing she won’t do to protect Benny, which means she must hide his identity—especially from his father.
Now Thorne has burst back into her home, searching for clues to a gangland mystery…and stirring a hunger Nadia hasn’t felt in two years. But Benny’s identity isn’t the only secret she’s keeping, and things are turning deadly. Can Thorne and Nadia trust each other long enough to stay alive and have a chance at happiness?
The cover was done by the wildly talented Amber of BookBeautiful.
The shorts are coming!
I’m releasing three short stories over the next couple of weeks. All of them have appeared in anthologies, but for those who want just one story (for a buck!) I’m putting them up.
The first is Kitten-Tiger and the Monk, Sophia’s story from the world of the Disillusionists. I just love this story, because I love a bad-girl heroine. Kitten-tiger first appeared in Wild & Steamy. Also, I love this cover! It’s by Jaycee at Sweet ‘n Spicy designs.
Kindle | Nook | Apple | Kobo | ARE | Smashwords
(I’ll set these links live as the book appears on them.)
Look for Conjuring Max, a standalone novella from the Code of Shadows world, and Old Salt, my Ghost Romance story, to appear as 99-cent shorts soon.
Off the Edge update
I am so thrilled with the enthusiasm and support of Off the Edge! I wasn’t sure if people would go for a secret agent linguistics expert, but I guess a lot of readers out there are as nerdy in their love of words as I am…and like to mix it with their love of hunky heroes.
“I was captivated by the story and flow of Off the Edge and I cannot wait to read more.”
~FV Jen, Fiction Vixen
“One of the very best romantic suspense novels I read in 2013.”
“Do yourself a favor and pick up this Carolyn Crane book. It is unique and stimulating and one of my favorites for this year.”
~Sunny, Love Affair With an Ereader
“The book was seriously on-the-edge suspenseful. I loved the chemistry between Laney and Peter.”
~Christi, Smitten with Reading
Off the Edge…slowly appearing in the wild
I was thrilled to see that Off the Edge is already up in the Kindle store; it is also up in the Nook store and ARE, where you can get epub, PDF, and mobi versions and Kobo and Apple don’t take new books over the holidays, so it will be a week more for those venues.
Sale! It’s $2.99 now, but after the holidays, it will go up to $3.99 and stay there for the foreseeable future. In other words, no post-release sales will be happening!
So excited about secret agent Macmillan!
I’m so excited about how this book is shaping up. It’s much longer and more intense that what I’d planned (and took way longer to write! I feel a little embarrassed about thinking it would be done late summer or fall when, let’s face it, it’s winter!) But I’m excited, because it’s every bit the book I wanted it to be. It will be out in December 27th. Here, the new cover (by Amber at bookbeautiful) and blurb! I put a version of this out on my facebook and blog, and I just want to thank my awesome friends and readers who gave me such great feedback.
SHE MAY BE HIS WORST ENEMY…
For deadly secret agent Peter Macmillan, language is a weapon—one he uses to hunt criminals, destroy plots, and charm enemies. Seducing information out of a beautiful singer in Bangkok hotel should be easy…except this particular singer has the power to destroy his cool façade, and with it, his last defense against a dark past.
HE MAY BE HER ONLY HOPE…
He tricked her. He helped himself to her body and her secrets. He has enemies everywhere. Laney Lancaster should hate Peter, but when she discovers him shirtless, sweaty, and chained up in the hotel’s dungeon, all she can think about is freeing him. Because she knows what it’s like to be trapped and alone. And she could use a dangerous friend.
They may be wrong for each other, but the instant they join forces, Laney and Peter are plunged into an odyssey of hot sex and dark danger. To survive, they must trust each other with their lives—and their hearts.
